Subject: Never Too Old To Become A Poly Maniac
I am the activity director for a wonderful assisted living community just
outside New Haven, CT. We have a weekly poly clay group and the interest and
energy in the group is astounding. The average age is 87 with some residents
in their late nineties. After 9-11 this group made cane flag pins and made
over $400.00 to donate to the fire fighters. They have made pins, pens and
salt & peppershakers. They love to wear their pins and also give their work
as gifts. Some have shipped their creations all over the country and abroad.
I have been working in this media for almost 20 years and have introduced it
in nursing homes and schools as well. The results are almost always the same.
The only problem I have now is that my classes have grown so big that I can
barely keep up. The real reward is sharing the pride the residents have in
their work and how excited they get when we "invent" a new project.
If there were any CT Polymer Clay Guild artisans who would like to make a
guest appearance, the residents would be thrilled. I have been too busy to
get to meetings but maybe this summer when I am not also teaching, I'll find
my way. The residents love to look at my clay books and have brought me
articles about clay artists in the New Haven Register.
Polymer clay is as we all know a very versatile artistic media, but it is
also very therapeutic, especially for people who have lost their fine motor
skills or have arthritis. Our projects give immediate gratification and
boosts self esteem.
My students are a few thousand years old collectively but still
learning.......
